Buried Treasure: Twice – Do What We Like

Most of the time, a k-pop group’s title track is the best song on their album. But, sometimes b-sides deserve recognition too. In the singles-oriented world of K-pop, I want to spotlight some of these buried treasures and give them the props they deserve.

Though I Can’t Stop Me is the undisputed highlight of Twice’s Eyes Wide Open, the entire album is remarkably consistent. That’s a hard feat to accomplish across thirteen tracks, but JYP Entertainment clearly have the best songwriters at their disposal. The album dips its feet into many different dance genres, but my favorite b-side is the relatively straightforward Do What We Like.

Do What We Like is the kind of simple, upbeat EDM track we used to hear a lot in the early 2010’s. The production is entirely predictable, but that’s part of its charm. The verses offer a restrained build to the big the electronic drop we all know is coming. And, the chorus hinges on the song’s oft-repeated title rather than opt for something more ambitious. But, the entire arrangement is sleek and satisfying.

Much of that comes down to Twice themselves, who have moved from chant-heavy aegyo to a much more sophisticated style of performance. The girls sound great here, delivering the verses with a sense of confidence that only comes with experience. And while Do What You Like never builds to any stunning crescendos, they ensure that the entire track goes down easy. This isn’t the kind of song you overanalyze. It’s made for playing loud and having a good time, and I think that appeal will be long-lasting.

  1. This is also my favourite track after listening to everything on the album. In the end it’s always the simple fun not-serious bops that end up sticking for a long time.

  2. I was waiting excitedly for which would be your Buried Treasure for the album. I personally loved this one the most and hoped for this. As you said, nothing crazy, but really feel good and easy listening.

  3. Completely agree, the entire album is pretty solid and cohesive, but I personally prefer Say Something and Up No More even more than the title track –there’s something about them that screams anime-from-the-90s to me, I can’t help but be biased. But yeah, overall the quality is up there, one of my favorite albums this year hands down.

  4. Eyes Wide Open is one of my fave albums and one of the albums I can listen to throughout and not skip a song! I personally love Up No More and their constant performance of the song lured me even more. Do What We Like is something I can listen to without my energy dropping. It’s the definition of a fun song.

  5. do what we like would’ve been better on blackpink’s later album, i think. The blackpink members have more character in their voices which suits this sorta kinda generic edm track more?

It looks like Up No More wouldn’t be your buried treasure then? that’s disappointing, it’s my favourite b-side from this album and i was curious about your thoughts haha!

And this is what makes TWICE’s charm. Their songs aren’t the most impressive both vocaly or technically, but JYPE know how to make them shine : just give them simple but enjoyable songs. Sometimes I think that many groups suffer from having songs way too complicated. They want the rapper who goes hard, the high note, the big dance chorus and so on… but they forget that they don’t have the members to be able to carry such an ambitious track.

This album was very good mainly for this reason. I’m glad to see them bouncing back after the disappointing More & More
