Most of the time, a k-pop group’s title track is the best song on their album. But, sometimes b-sides deserve recognition too. In the singles-oriented world of K-pop, I want to spotlight some of these buried treasures and give them the props they deserve.
Not only have Twice steadily been refining their sound in 2019, but they’ve really stepped it up for their albums as well. As K-pop’s most successful girl group of our current era, the consistency of their work should match that title. And with Fancy You and Feel Special, they’ve gathered a solid collection of high-quality dance pop.
Feel Special is great all the way through, but I was struck most strongly by its third track, Get Loud. But… Get Loud is essentially tropical pop, right? How can I possibly love a song that borrows so heavily from a genre I’m so sick of?
Yes, Get Loud has that familiar tropical thump, but it’s twisted with a club-ready polish that transforms it into something much more thrilling. It’s also a sound that works incredibly well with Twice’s vocals. They’ve rarely sounded more confident or in control as they do here. Most importantly, Get Loud arrives packaged with a knockout hook. Its carnival-like appeal seems well-suited to something like Eurovision, going for broke with dramatic drumlines and celebratory energy. Of the song’s three composers, my eye went immediately to Ryan S. Jhun. He brings a similar bombast to Loud as he did to Pick Me from season two of Produce 101. I love big, bold pop music like this. It’s nothing deep, but its fervor alone elicits so much joy.

This was my favorite b-side on first listen! I know a lot of people have said Twice’s b-sides have been good for years but I really only started agreeing with that this year.
Fancy You and Feel Special are super great all around albums.

I am not hearing excessive tropicality, just a touch here and there.
I find it a bit monotonous and a tad too noisy. Its the mixing – to hear all the interesting bits I have to turn up the volume fairly high, even on the current best earbuds, but then the added mid-range noise is too much. It doesn’t help that the vocals are all doubled with a synthetic harmony added a third above with an echo effect, which just adds to the noise. I don’t think I could listen to it more than once or twice on earbuds.
That said this is the kind of song that is popular because it is popular. It is also the kind that gets remixed to be the concert hype song. Actually I am surprised that the vocal starts 10 seconds in, but I am sure they will find some way to create an vamped intro and a length vamp somewhere in the middle so the girls can walk all over the thrust stage giving fan service.

Jihyo’s not the best lyricist, she’s hardly a “lyricist” at all. None of girls can be considered lyricists. They may be credited in songs but they really just add a little here and there which is why their names show up at the end in the credits. Most of the good work is done by the seasoned song writers their company.Even so, the lyrics of the songs she’s credited are really nothing game changing, including this song.
