Most of the time, a k-pop group’s title track is the best song on their album. But, sometimes b-sides deserve recognition too. In the singles-oriented world of K-pop, I want to spotlight some of these buried treasures and give them the props they deserve.

VERIVERY had a b-side on their debut mini album called Alright. I wanted to love it in all its baby-Seventeen, Very Nice-inspired glory. But, the song felt a little underdeveloped. Thankfully, the group’s second mini features a sort of aural sequel in the form of Get Ready. The same funky backbone is there, but the melody is stronger and the performance more polished.

I wouldn’t be mad if VERIVERY made an entire career out of this rambunctious sound. I’ve always loved retro funk, and the group’s bright, youthful energy is a good match for the genre. Get Ready retains the new jack swing beat from their singles, but adds blasts of brass, chunky rhythm guitar and synthesized bass to addictive effect. Much of its verses are driven by gawky hip-hop, but the chorus has a wonderfully sly melody that seesaws up and down before blooming into a brief shot of vocal harmony. The tempo is high throughout, refusing to give listeners a moment to breathe. I wonder if this style of song will become a fixture on all future VERIVERY albums? It’s got a freewheeling, jam session energy that I’d love to hear more of in K-pop.
