Baby, Don’t Cry (from XOXO / Growl – 2013)
One of EXO’s most iconic slow jams, Baby, Don’t Cry opens with an evocative piano riff that sets the tone for an extended r&b plea. In doing so, it pulls the best from EXO’s vocal line. The track has a sucker-punch of a chorus, supported brilliantly by minimalist percussion and that insistent, instantly-memorable piano. Cry’s bridge offers dynamic interplay between rap and vocals, gradually adding harmony before building to a fevered pitch of impassioned ad-libs. Once that storm has passed, Cry finishes as it began — that omnipresent piano bolstered by a renewed weight from the aural melodrama that preceded it.

I missed this completely. I love slow songs that actually have dynamics to it, would be nice if we have more r&b that takes cues from this

If you love this you should listen to TVXQ’s Before U Go. That song gives me goosebumps.

Oooh, that one is nice too. I like how the song feels so smooth yet powerful. It’s overdramatic in the best way possible

Wow, an actual mid-tempo in kpop!
Funny, I was half-expecting a sudden drop into something harder.
Its OK. Vocals are great. The chorus repeats the word “cuh-rye” with a hard C and two syllables a few too many times for me. By the 2nd repeat of the chorus, I was hoping they would start with “why’s” and “bye’s” and “sky”s” and “lies”. (OT: also why the Beyoncé song “Halo” drives me nuts. Way too many hard breath Hhhhhalo’s. repeated at volume.)

Ha! Though I didn’t mention it, the “cuh-rye” is one of my favorite parts of the song. It’s so wonderfully overwrought.
