Don’t Go (from XOXO / Growl – 2013)
EXO’s first full album is flush with these kind of lovelorn mid-tempos. The truth is, if it wasn’t for their vocals, any boy group of EXO’s era could have tackled a song like Don’t Go with similar results. The song is as straightforward as they come, melodic and satisfying without bringing anything new to the table. I appreciate the resounding instrumental during the chorus and the addition of guitar and harmony during the rousing second verse. The pre-chorus is also quite pretty, and features the song’s best melody. However, there’s only so much you can do with this kind of mainstream, risk-averse material. It’s solid album filler — nothing more, nothing less.

But.. but.. the iconic piano ostinato? Not even a mention??

Yeah… it’s definitely appealing. Blame it on the briefness of these A-Z reviews.

Haha I’m (mostly) just being dramatic. I’ll grudgingly admit this is ‘only’ solid album filler, because it’s probably my favorite Exo b-side. There’s something so pleasing about the nimble melody, and I think it highlights their range of timbres too.
