K-Pop A-Z Review: EXO – My Lady

One song. Every day. Alphabetical order.

My Lady (from XOXO / Growl – 2013)

Closing out EXO’s first full-length album, My Lady offers a bluesy slab of r&b groove. The tempo is always faster than I expect for a song like this, especially as the two-part chorus picks up for a swinging blend of rhythmic, MJ-style phrasing followed by a searing vocal performance underlined by airy harmonies. There are almost too many ideas stuffed into My Lady for its 3+ minute length, making it feel slightly unfinished. But, there’s a briskness to the track that’s quite satisfying. It has a refreshing, jam-session appeal whereas many of EXO’s tracks (and K-pop in general) can feel studio-perfected to the point of rigidity.

  1. One of my favorite b-sides in their discography! Easily a 9 for me, I think. That final “myyy laaadyyy” near the end of the track gives me chills every time.

I’ve gotta hand jt to their vocals here—I don’t think this would sound quite the same sung by anyone but EXO.
