Miracles In December (from Miracles In December – 2013)

I often use the word “sentiment” as a criticism — the last refuge of a song devoid of interesting melody or production work. But, sentiment can be a powerful thing, and often breathes new life into a track that might otherwise fall between the cracks. Miracles In December is most certainly my favorite EXO ballad, and one of my favorite pop ballads of the past decade. I admit that much of that praise is due to sentiment. December is so closely tied to winter, and the holidays, and the inevitable feelings that surround this time of year. But beyond that, it’s just a flawless melody, beautifully and hauntingly delivered. The song unfolds in an almost cinematic way, anchored by one of the most stirring choruses in EXO’s discography.
