Thunder (from Overdose – 2014)
Thunder has a wonderfully late-90’s/early-00’s throwback appeal. It’s an uncluttered pop/r&b track with a straightforward groove and subtle use of symphonic synths. This provides ample opportunity for EXO to showcase their vocals. Members like D.O. and Baekhyun were born for this kind of material, but there’s an irresistible smoothness to the entire group’s performance. And while nothing about Thunder really knocks you over like its title might suggest, the whole is incredibly polished and addicting. I especially like the rapid-fire bridge, which acts as an aggressive dance break that splits the track down the middle before its climactic final chorus.

~
People like to use soaring high notes from the bridge of a song as examples of amazing K-pop vocals, but to be honest I find D.O.’s opening lines in Thunder to be way more impressive and indicative of skill. His tone is lovely, his vowels are shaped so well, and there’s the little hint of vibrato in there. His singing sounds so effortless and captivating; I was floored when I first heard it.
