What If… (from Exodus / Love Me Right – 2015)

As someone who came of age in the 90’s, I have a total soft spot for this kind of r&b slow jam. For those of us who might remember, the vocal hook that opens What If reminds me of Bone Thugs N Harmony while the rest of the track recalls early Usher and even a bit of KC & Jojo. In other words, What If scratches a plethora of nostalgic itches, all while harnessing EXO’s incredibly warm vocal blend. I don’t think the melody quite matches up to its classic influences, but I’m here for the vibe. Bonus points go to Baekhyun, who rattles off an effortless power note at the song’s climax, bringing that unique EXO flair to the proceedings.
