Lady Luck (from Exodus / Love Me Right – 2015)
Opening with distorted vocals that sound like the pop song version of blowing a raspberry, Lady Luck retains this unconventional bass even as additional elements are added to the instrumental. Its production is a fitful brew that matches the track’s stop/start structure. There are many ideas at play here (sensual vocal samples being chief among them), but Lady Luck is missing the kind of knockout melody that might tie them all together. The evocative pre-chorus is as close as we get, and hearkens back to the more restrained r&b of EXO’s 2013 work. As usual, their vocal performance is utterly gorgeous.
