K-Pop A-Z Review: EXO – Beautiful

One song. Every day. Alphabetical order.

Beautiful (from Exodus / Love Me Right – 2015)

Though 2015’s Exodus album includes some of EXO’s best tracks, I find its second half to be a bit sluggish. Beautiful is a fine mid-to-uptempo r&b track, but apart from its catchy synth riff and lush vocal arrangement, it feels too much like late-album filler. Its repetitive chorus recalls American r&b from the 90’s, which has always been a solid match for EXO’s warm vocal timbres. However, there are superior versions of this exact track in EXO’s discography. The song never really builds to any memorable moment, preferring to paint its shimmering pleasantness in gentle, easy-going strokes.

  1. I’ve just always liked something about this track even though I know it’s nothing special. Listening to it with headphones, it’s almost calming and therapeutic (which I know isn’t generally what you look for in a song, and me neither, but it works for me here haha). I wish more album filler sounded like this if it has to be filler!
