K-Pop A-Z Review: EXO – Cloud 9

One song. Every day. Alphabetical order.

Cloud 9 (from Ex’Act / Lotto – 2016)

Opening with one of the most off-kilter introductions in EXO’s catalog, Cloud 9 successfully melds two diverging sounds together. The chorus employs an aloof, trap-infused instrumental that would normally stall momentum in a song like this. But, a dynamic vocal keeps things moving during the secondary refrain that appears halfway through the track. These segments are buttressed by Cloud 9‘s warm, funk-pop verses, which harbor their own surprises courtesy of the instrumental’s seesaw synth strings. These disparate ingredients shouldn’t work together as well as they do, but EXO’s charismatic performance helps soften the track’s more abrasive leanings.

  1. This song is a little strange, but that makes it memorable. Chanyeol starts it by saying “you got me flying up” but his notes are just descending, which seems discordant, and then those weird strings are behind him. The song really gives a flying/gliding sensation once the vocals take over, though.
