K-Pop A-Z Review: EXO – Heaven

Heaven (from Ex’Act / Lotto – 2016)

Sandwiched between more experimental tracks on EXO’s underrated 2016 album, Heaven’s exuberant, laid-back funk pop offers a welcome respite. The song is nothing unusual, but its piano-fueled production has a engagingly old-school aesthetic, augmented with record scratches and the occasional splash of organ. A strong breakbeat grounds the track as its melodic chorus glides effortlessly over the top. Baekhyun’s voice is used especially well here, appearing throughout all three choruses with a confident power. Ultimately, the song is too one-note to be a complete stand-out in EXO’s discography, but that one note is a total corker.
