K-Pop A-Z Review: EXO – White Noise

One song. Every day. Alphabetical order.

White Noise (from Ex’Act / Lotto – 2016)

The first thing you’ll notice about White Noise is its odd, herky-jerky percussion that feels as if its constantly fighting to keep up with itself. This helps to forge experimental verses that take a bit of work to get used to. The song’s chorus is much more universal, gliding on a breezy pop melody and a pleasant falsetto performance. Surprisingly, the whole thing comes together as more inviting than you’d expect. A standout rap during the bridge gets us back on rhythm, just in time to segue into a beautiful, vocal-heavy refrain that sets up the final hook.

  1. At first listen I didn’t like White Noise, but then I watched the performance and grew to love it. Maybe the dance gave me a sense of how the song is meant to groove.
