They Never Know (from Ex’Act / Lotto – 2016)
Opening with a soulful touch of organ and scratchy LP ambiance, They Never Know aims for languid nostalgia and mostly hits the mark. Melodically, it’s a pretty simple pop song, but the members’ light harmonies help to make the chorus stand out. Even better is the trippy garage breakdown that follows. Ultimately, the track is too fitful and airy to be much of an album highlight, but the instrumental brings a welcome sense of experimentation that suits the group well. The vocal-rich bridge feels like a harbinger of the awesome a capella on 2018’s Tempo.
