The Eve (from The War / The Power Of Music – 2017)
Opening EXO’s 2017 album with a dark blast of creeping pop, The Eve takes an almost militant approach to its verses before pulling back to a vocal-rich pre-chorus. The chorus pulses with addictive bass, following a rhythmic structure that caters to EDM’s drop style but substitutes vocals in place of pure instrumentation. At just under three minutes, the song is finished before you know it, and I’ve always wished that it built to a more satisfying climax. Instead, The Eve slinks forward with a measured pace, never too in-your-face but effortlessly cool all the same.

For a b-side, this is actually a really strong b-side. There is no formal video, so the dance video has 89m views! I like this song a lot because it is a strong song, but isn’t all in your face. It is lower and darker, and consistently minor. And then it knows when enough is enough, the song has made its point, and it ends.
It has always reminded me a bit of Erasure “Ship of Fools” – consistently lower and a bit hypnotic. (There I go again with a Vince Clarke reference.)
Also, of note, Henry Lau is a co-writer – the song was originally meant for his solo.
