Diamond (from The War / The Power Of Music – 2017)
Undoubtedly one of EXO’s more polarizing tracks, Diamond sees the group move past their signature style and into a swag-heavy blend of EDM and trap. After an exciting, melodic build up, the track shifts gears entirely. The tempo slows, the instrumental becomes more skeletal, and vocals are replaced with hip-hop posturing. This all sounds disastrous on paper, but Diamond works better than you might think. Sure, the chorus isn’t great, but the verses pulse with anthemic fervor that makes me wish they’d been grafted to a stronger song. And then there’s Diamond‘s beguiling bridge, which slows things down to incorporate a sitar (or sitar-like synth) flourish in the background. It’s unexpected, to say the least!

This is the sort of experimental track that SM revels in. It wouldn’t be an SM group release if there wasn’t at least one of these on every album.
Except for the big fat bass brass synth sound, I am kinda digging this one.
