Song Review: Vahn (NINE.i) – Feeling (ft. BLKZEN)

VAHN - Feeling (feat. BLKZEN)I chose NINE.i’s Vahn as my second favorite K-pop producer of 2023. Not only was he responsible for his group’s excellent mini album, but he also had a hand in Golden Child’s Feel Me. That second song feels like a roadmap to the similarly-titled Feeling — the title track for his first EP. In a year without any new NINE.i music, this is an unexpected treat.

Vahn isn’t only a sharp songwriter. His unique vocal tone is instantly recognizable, melding equal parts gruff and smooth for a compelling contrast. He suits rock music well, though his work also carries a strong pop edge. Feeling is a wonderful blend of guitar and synth, tethered to a driving beat that feels instantly cathartic. It’s very much in line with his previous material, but rather than a retread this marks a more personal dive into what’s quickly becoming a signature sound.

Rapper BLKZEN adds a competing tone to the mix, though I’m not sure a guest was needed on this particular song. Vahn carries things just fine on his own, injecting so much character into the performance. This helps twist Feeling‘s more generic leanings, elevating the experience and ensuring the track’s longevity. I hope listeners give this a chance because I can easily see Vahn developing a super solid solo career.

  1. Really good mood to this while still keeping a strong sense of momentum. I can see why you’ve highlighted him as a producer and artist to watch.

As an aside, the shot of a ‘Code Geass’ lighter in the MV got a good laugh out of me, not at all an anime pull I would have ever expected in a K-pop video!

  2. I share your sentiment and really hope people tune in. I LOVE 95% percent of Nine.i’s music (which he wrote, produced and/or arranged), Golcha’s Feel Me, Ikon’s Panorama, his single Crush on You (released back in July). I’m sure this one will be in line with the rest since I liked it at first listen.
